How to Care for Hoya Plants Indoors

Hoyas, also called wax plants, are easygoing, long-lived trailing plants with thick, waxy leaves and, eventually, clusters of intricate star-shaped flowers. They're more forgiving than their collector reputation suggests: treat them a little like a succulent, give them light and patience, and they'll trail and bloom for years.

Light

Hoyas want plenty of bright, indirect light, it's the key to blooming. A spot near an east or west window, or a few feet from a bright south window, is ideal. Too little light and they grow slowly and won't flower; some gentle morning sun is welcome, but avoid harsh midday rays.

Water

Those thick leaves store water, so hoyas like to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, then wait until the soil is mostly dry before watering again. They're far more tolerant of being too dry than too wet, overwatering and soggy roots are the usual cause of trouble.

Soil & potting

Use a chunky, fast-draining mix, many growers add orchid bark and perlite, or even grow hoyas in an orchid-style mix. They flower best when slightly root-bound, so resist the urge to over-pot.

Encouraging flowers

Hoyas bloom from specback structures called peduncles, do not cut these off, because they re-bloom from the same spurs year after year. Bright light, a snug pot, and a little patience (mature plants flower more readily) are the recipe. Once buds form, keep conditions stable.

Common problems & fixes

  • Wrinkled, soft leaves: either too dry or, if mushy, overwatered, check the roots.
  • No flowers: usually not enough light, or the plant is still young.
  • Pests: mealybugs love hoyas' nooks, inspect leaf joints and treat early.

Are hoyas pet safe?
